అభివృద్ధిపేరుతో జరుగుతున్న విస్తాపన, విధ్వంసం, హిందూ మతోన్మాదం పెరిగి మైనారిటి మతస్తులపై ఊచకోత, ఉగ్రవాదం పేరుతో హక్కుల ఉల్లంఘన, తీవ్రవాదం పెనుప్రమాదం అని చెప్తూ ఆపరేషన్‌ గ్రీన్‌హంట్‌ పేరుతో ఆదీవాసీలపై చేస్తున్న యుద్ధం, అన్నీ కూడా హక్కుల ఉనికికే ప్రమాదం ఏర్పడింది. ఈ సవాళ్లను ఎదుర్కోవడం ఒంటరిగా సాధ్యం కాదు. హక్కుల సంఘాలు కలిసి ఐక్యంగానే హక్కులను కాపాడుకోగలుగుతాం. హక్కుల ఉద్యమాన్ని బలోపేతం చేయగలుగతాం.

బాలగోపాల్‌ ఆకస్మిక మరణం హక్కుల ఉద్యమకారులందరినీ విషాదంలోకి నెట్టివేసింది. బాలగోపాల్‌ ‘ఇక లేడు’ అనే నిస్పృహతోపాటు, ‘పౌరసమాజం’ ఒక రకమైన భయానికి, వెలితికి లోనయ్యిందని కొంతమంది అభిప్రాయపడ్డారు. కానీ, ఈ పరిస్థితి తాత్కాలికమే. పురుషోత్తం, ఆజం అలీలను సర్కారీ హంతకముఠాలు కిరాతకంగా హత్య చేసి ఒక భయానక వాతావరణం సృష్టించారు. పౌరహక్కుల సంఘం ఇక పనిచేస్తుందా? అనే సంశయం, సందేహాలు ఏర్పడ్డాయి. బాలగోపాల్‌ ఆ సందర్భంలో ‘నిస్పృహను, నిస్సహాయతను అధిగమించడానికి కావల్సిన దృఢ సంకల్పం, మానసిక స్థైర్యాన్ని పురుషోత్తం నుండి ఉద్యమాలు, ఉద్యమకారులు, ప్రజలు నేర్చుకోగలిగితే అతని మరణం వృధా కానట్టే’ అని ధైర్యాన్ని యిచ్చాడు. పావన చరితుల్ని గూర్చి ఎందరు ఎన్ని సంగతులు చెప్పినా, మళ్లీ మళ్లీ వినబుద్ధి అవుతుంది గదా. కె.బాలగోపాల్‌ గురించి అసంఖ్యాకంగా వస్తున్న రాతలు, కవితలు చూశాక నాకు సంబంధించిన ఒక చిన్న ఘటన కూడా నలుగురితో పంచుకోవాలనిపించింది. అది 1999 సంవత్సరం అని గుర్తు. ఒకనాటి మిట్ట మధ్యాహ్నం మా ఇంటి కాలింగ్‌ బెల్‌ మోగింది. వెళ్లి తలుపు తీసి చూస్తే, ఎవరో పరిచయం లేని పెద్దమనిషి. ‘నేను కె. బాలగోపాల్‌ని’ అన్నారు. నేను సంభ్రమంగా-మీరు మా ఇంటికి రావటం అదృష్టం అని, లోపలికి ఆహ్వానించాను. కూచోబెట్టి మంచినీళ్లు తెచ్చిస్తే తాగారు.

నాకు అంతకు ముందు ఆయన్ని గుర్తుపట్టే పాటి పరిచయం లేకపోయినా, ఆయన ఎవరో, ఏమిటో నాకు చాలా వరకు తెలుసు. ‘ఇంట్లో ఎవరూ లేరు, అయినా నాకు టీ పెట్టడం వచ్చు, తీసుకుందురు గాని’ అన్నాను. ఈ లాంఛనం అసలు పట్టించుకోకుండానే-’నేను ఒక నోటిఫికేషను గురించి వచ్చాను. విశాఖ కోర్టులో గిరిజనుల కేసొకటి వాదిస్తున్నాను. ఆ రెవెన్యూ డిపార్టుమెంటు వాళ్లెప్పు డూ వాళ్లకు జాబులు, నోటీసులు ఇంగ్లీషులో పంపిస్తుంటారు. వాటిల్లో ఏముందో వాళ్లకు చెప్పేవారు లేరు. అలాంటివన్నీ తెలుగులోనే పంపాలని ప్రభుత్వ ఉత్తర్వులుంటే, నాకు కొంత ఉపయోగం ఉంటుంది’ అన్నారు.

భూమిక నివాళి (November, 2009).

ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్‌లో మానవ హక్కుల ఉద్యమానికి మరో పేరైన బాలగోపాల్‌ అక్టోబర్‌ 8  రాత్రి పదిగంటలకు అల్సర్‌తో హఠాత్తుగా మరణించాడు. 57 ఏళ్ళ వయస్సులో జరిగిన ఆయన మరణం మానవ హక్కుల ఉద్యమంతో, ప్రజాతంత్ర ఉద్యమాలతో సంబంధం ఉన్న ప్రతి ఒక్కరిని దిగ్భ్రాంతికి గురి చేసింది. ఆయన లేరనే వాస్తవాన్ని జీర్ణించుకోవడం హక్కుల కార్యకర్తలకు ఉద్యమాభిమానులకు సాధ్యం కావడం లేదు.

By the time I joined as a member of the city unit of Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee in 1995, K.Balagopal was already a legend among the progressive students of the Hyderabad University. Whereas his writings in Economic and Political Weekly were guideposts in forming one’s early political perspective, his interventions in the Telugu public debates on literature, movements, history or ‘human nature’ were topics of passionate debate among us. K. Balagopal was not a civil rights activist of Andhra Pradesh but a crusader against any human rights violation in this part of the globe. Human Rights Forum

It is with great sadness that we in the Human Rights Forum inform you of the demise of our colleague and friend K Balagopal. He died at a hospital in Hyderabad at about 10 pm on October 8, 2009 due to lung aspiration following a bleeding stomach ulcer. He passed away just 5 days after the HRF successfully held its 3rd State conference at Anantapur. The loss is unbearable and we are all devastated.  We in the HRF thank all friends who have conveyed to us their condolences. In these most difficult times, we rededicate ourselves to rights activism, the work that was so dear to Balagopal for three decades.  (Below is an English version of the pamphlet brought out in Telugu by the HRF on Oct 10, 2009)

Balagopal, who over the years had become a synonym for the human rights movement in Andhra Pradesh, is no more. He passed away suddenly on 8 October at about 10.00 pm in Hyderabad from lung aspiration following a bleeding stomach ulcer. His death at the age of 57 has left the human rights community and democratic movements in a state of shock. Activists and supporters of the movement are still finding it difficult to accept the reality of his death, even as people in remote villages are mourning the loss of their dear friend, who was always with them in the time of crisis. It is too soon to make a comprehensive assessment of Balagopal’s life and his three decades of rights activism. That will have to wait another day. ప్రాణహిత కన్నీటి నివాళి

బాలగోపాల్  ఇంక లేరు అనే వార్త ఎంత మాత్రం నమ్మశక్యంగా లేదు. అది క్రూరమైన వాస్తవమని తెలుస్తున్నప్పుడల్లా,  అది అబద్దమైతే ఎంత బాగుండు అని గొంతుకు పుట్టెడు దుఃఖం అడ్డు పడుతున్నది. నిద్రపోతున్నట్టే ఉన్న ఆయన నిర్జీవ శరీరం ఫొటొల్లో చూస్తున్నప్పుడల్లా కన్నీళ్ళు ఆగకుండా దుంకుతున్నయి. ఎక్కడ పేదలకు, అభాగ్యులకు, దళితులకు, ఆదివాసిలకు, సమాజంలో నోరూ, ‘అస్తిత్వమూ’  లేని అసంఖ్యాక ప్రజానీకానికి అన్యాయం జరిగిందన్నా డైరీ పట్టుకు ప్రత్యక్షమయ్యే బాలగోపాల్ ఇంక కనబడరు అంటేనే గొప్ప శూన్యం ఆవరించి హృదయం భోరుమంటున్నది. తెలంగాణ లో అన్నట్టు ‘మా ఆయుష్షు పోసుకునైనా’ బాలగోపాల్ మళ్ళీ జీవించి వస్తే ఎంత బాగుండు అనిపిస్తున్నది.  అప్పుడే ఆయన వెళ్ళిపోయి మూడు రోజులు దాటుతున్నది. ఆయన లేడనే కఠోర సత్యం వెన్నంటి వేటాడుతున్నది. more

బర్కత్‌పుర, అక్టోబర్‌ 15 (ఆన్‌లైన్‌): హక్కుల సాధన విషయంలో ప్రజలకు ప్రశ్నించడాన్ని నేర్పిన మహోన్నతుడు బాలగోపాల్‌ అని పలువురు వక్తలు నివాళులర్పించారు. ఆయన ఆలోచనా విధానంతో ముం దుకు సాగినప్పుడే రాజ్యహింసను, సామ్రాజ్యవాదాన్ని సమూలంగా నిర్మూలించగలమని ఉద్బోధించారు. అణగారిన ప్రజల హక్కుల పోరాట సమితి ఆధ్వర్యంలో గురువారం రాత్రి బషీర్‌బాగ్‌ ప్రెస్‌క్లబ్‌లో బాలగోపాల్‌ సంస్మరణ సభ జరిగింది. ఈ సభలో ప్రజా గాయకుడు గద్దర్‌ మాట్లాడు తూ బాలగోపాల్‌ మృతి దళితులకు, ఆదివాసులకు తీరని లోటని చెప్పారు. పోలీసుల హింసతోపాటు.. నక్సలైట్ల హింసను కూడా బాలగోపాల్‌ ఖండి ంచారని ఆయన అన్నారు. దీనిపై చర్చ జరగాలని కోరారు. The condolence meeting began with the hall observing a minute’s silence in memory of Dr. Balagopal. Then a short series of video clippings from various periods of Dr. Balagopal’s life were screened. The clippings captured Dr. Balagopal in all his intellectual clarity, quiet brilliance and simplicity.
