హక్కుల సదస్సు, అక్టోబర్ 7 2012 , హైదరాబాద్

బాలగోపాల్ మనందరికీ దూరమై మూడేళ్లు అయ్యింది.
ఈ మూడేళ్లలో రాష్ట్రం, దేశం ఎదుర్కొంటున్న అనేక సమస్యలు ఆయన్ని మనకు మళ్ళీ మళ్ళీ గుర్తు చేస్తున్నాయి. తెలంగాణ ఆకాంక్ష అన్ని విధాలా న్యాయమైనదని ప్రకటించిన వ్యక్తి ఎన్నేళ్ళయినా పరిష్కార దిశగా అంగుళం ముందుకు కదలని ఆ ఉద్యమం గురించి ఏ పరిష్కారాలను సూచించేవారో, హక్కుల ఉద్యమం కారంచేడు, నుంచి ఎంతో నేర్చుకుందని పదే పదే చెప్పిన వ్యక్తి నాలుగు నెలలు గడిచినా లక్షింపేట దళితుల ఊచకోతపై చార్జిషీటు దాఖలు చేయని పోలీసులకు ఎన్ని రాజ్యాంగ పాఠాలు నేర్పేవారో, రాబోయే కాలమంతా ఛత్తీస్గఢ్లో రక్తపు పారతాయి, దాన్ని నిలవరించడానికి ముందుకు రండి అని 2006లోనే మేధావులను క్రియాశీలుల్ని చేయడానికి ప్రయత్నించిన వ్యక్తి. వాన్పిక్ తదితర ప్రాజెక్టుల్లో అందరూ కేవలం స్కాంలనే చూస్తుంటే వాటి వెనుక పొంచి ఉన్న విధ్వంసక అభివృద్ధి మహమ్మారి గురించి ఎన్ని విశ్లేషణాత్మక వ్యాసాలు రాసి ఉండేవారో, మళ్ళీ మొదలైన రైతుల ఆత్మహత్యలు, సుప్రీంకోర్టుకు వెళ్ళి ఆగిపోయిన వాకపల్లి రేప్ కేసు, చమురు వెలికితీత వల్ల కుంగిపోతున్న గోదావరి డెల్టా.. ఇలా హక్కు ల ఉద్యమం తన సామర్థ్యాన్ని పనితనాన్ని నిరూపించుకోవాల్సిన వచ్చి న ప్రతి సందర్భం ఆయనను గుర్తు చేసింది. సాధించిన కొద్దిపాటి విజయాల్లో బాలగోపాల్ గుర్తులను వెతుక్కుంటూ ముందుకు సాగడమొక్కటే మేము ఆయనకు ఇవ్వగల నివాళి.
ఈ నేపథ్యంలో అక్టోబర్ 7 (ఆదివారం) ఉదయం 10 గంటల నుంచి సాయంత్రం 5 గంటల వరకు, హైదరాబాద్ కింగ్ కోఠిలోని నిజాం కాలేజీ పక్కన ఉన్న భారతీయ విద్యాభవన్లోని సెమినార్ హాల్లో ‘బాలగోపాల్ యాదిలో’ హక్కుల సదస్సు జరుగుతుంది.
మొదటగా ‘బాలగోపాల్ – హక్కుల ఉద్యమం’ అంశంపై ఎ. చంద్రశేఖర్,
అనంతరం ‘ప్రపంచీకరణ – జీవ వైవిధ్యం – ప్రత్యామ్నాయాలు’ అంశంపై పర్యావరణ వేత్త అశిష్ కొఠారి ప్రసంగిస్తారు.
మధ్యాహ్నం ‘అణువిద్యుత్ – కూడంకుళం పోరాటం’ అంశంపై సామాజిక కార్యకర్త ‘నిత్యానంద్ జయరామన్’,
తదనంతరం ‘సామాజిక న్యాయంలో చట్టం పాత్ర’ అంశంపై సుప్రీంకోర్టు న్యాయవాది నిత్యా రామకృష్ణన్ ప్రసంగిస్తారు.
ఈ సదస్సులో బాలగోపాల్ రాసిన ‘Of Capital And Other Punishments’, ‘మనిషి మార్క్సిజం’ పుస్తకావిష్కరణలు జరుగుతాయి.

Balagopal Commemorative Human Rights Seminar, October 7th 2012, Hyderabad
Dear friends,
This October 8, it will be three years since Balagopal passed away.
On Sunday, Oct. 7th, 2012 we are organising a day-long commemorative meet in Hyderabad.
The venue is Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in King Koti, Hyderabad.
The meet will begin at 10 am.
In the forenoon, A Chandrasekhar, HRF vice-president will speak on Balagopal’s contribution to the human rights movement.
This will be followed by Ashish Kothari of Kalpavriksh who will speak on ‘Globalisation, biodiversity and alternatives”.
Post-lunch, writer and social activist Nityanand Jayaraman will speak on “Nuclear power–the Kudankulam struggle”.
The 4th talk is by Supreme Court lawyer Nitya Ramakrishnan on “Role of the law in social change”.
Two books will be released on the occasion:
1. ‘Of Capital and Other Punishments’ by K Balagopal (a compilation of articles in English on the death penalty). Published by HRF
2. ‘Manishi, Marxism’ (Reflections on human agency, social movements and Marxism) by K Balagopal. Published by Perspectives.

Prachara Yathra:
We also invite you to join a prachara yathra in Bhadrachalam division of Khammam district on Oct 9 and 10 against
the Polavaram project. The protest is being organised by HRF and several adivasi, dalit and mass organisations.
The yathra will begin at Pochavaram village in VR Puram mandal of Bhadrachalam division, Khammam district at
10 am on October 9. It will cover proposed submergence villages in the VR Puram and Chintoor mandals on that day.
On October 10, the yathra will proceed from Chintoor at 8 am and cover villages in Kunavaram and
Bhadrachalam mandals as well. It will culminate in the evening at Nellipaka village.
A Human Rights Film Festival
from Citizen Matters, Bangalore
Suchitra Film Society in collaboration with Manasa and Vimochana organises a human rights film festival from November 2 to 5. The screening will be held at Suchitra Film Society, Banashankari II Stage at 6.45 p.m. on all days.
The festival has been dedicated to the memory of the social activist, K. Balagopal who passed away recently.
Some of the films to be screened include “Soldiers in Sarong”, by Lokendra Arambam, “Tales from the margin” by Kavita Joshi, “Sharmila – the iron lady” by CNN- IBN, a 30-minute story on Irom Sharmila, “Redefining peace”, by K.P Sasi and “Jashn-e-azadi” (How we celebrate freedom) by Sanjay Kak. “True lies in Manipur” CNN- IBN 30 minutes story on the fake encounter in July 23, 2009 and the aftermath of the expose, and “Development flows from the barrel of the Gun” will also be screened.

Memory of K. Balagopal- Bangalore, Fri 16th October (5 pm)
There will be a meeting in memory of human rights activist and lawyer, K. Balagopal. Balagopal, who was an inspiration to many in the civil liberties and human rights movement in India, died of a cardiac arrest on October 8th.
Balagopal was the founder member of Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee (APCLC) and later of Human Rights Forum. ,He was also an advocate who fought several cases to obtain justice for the poor without charge. Read the rest of this entry »
