A Human Rights Film Festival

Suchitra Film Society in collaboration with Manasa and Vimochana organises a human rights film festival from November 2 to 5. The screening will be held at Suchitra Film Society, Banashankari II Stage at 6.45 p.m. on all days.
The festival has been dedicated to the memory of the social activist, K. Balagopal who passed away recently.

Some of the films to be screened include “Soldiers in Sarong”, by Lokendra Arambam, “Tales from the margin” by Kavita Joshi, “Sharmila – the iron lady” by CNN- IBN, a 30-minute story on Irom Sharmila, “Redefining peace”, by K.P Sasi and “Jashn-e-azadi” (How we celebrate freedom) by Sanjay Kak. “True lies in Manipur” CNN- IBN 30 minutes story on the fake encounter in July 23, 2009 and the aftermath of the expose, and “Development flows from the barrel of the Gun” will also be screened.

Memory of K. Balagopal- Bangalore, Fri 16th October (5 pm)

There will be a meeting in memory of human rights activist and lawyer, K. Balagopal. Balagopal, who was an inspiration to many in the civil liberties and human rights movement in India, died of a cardiac arrest on October 8th.

Balagopal was the founder member of Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee (APCLC) and later of Human Rights Forum. ,He was also an advocate who fought several cases to obtain justice for the poor without charge. Read the rest of this entry »

Balagopal memorial meet (Hyderabad, October 12, 2009)

Dear friends,
Our colleague and friend K Balagopal passed away at about 10 pm on October 8 in a hospital at Hyderabad.. His demise was due to lung aspiration following a bleeding stomach ulcer. A memorial meet is being held on monday evening in Hyderabad.
